Southern Appalachian Mountains Kindergarten Lesson Plans Prepared by Jennifer Turner Union County Primary School Blairsville, Georgia DAY ONE Objective: Students will learn about Appalachian history. Procedure: Teacher will read the story “When I Was Young in the Mountains” by Cynthia Rylant and Diane Goode. The students will draw a picture of a family in the Appalachian Mountains. Evaluation: Students will meet the objective with 100% accuracy. GPS- SSKG1 DAY TWO Objective: Students will learn about different types of food eaten in the Appalachian Mountains. Procedure: Students will be given the opportunity to try local made Sorghum Syrup with biscuits. Evaluation: Students will meet the objective with 100% accuracy. GPS- SKP1 DAY THREE Objective: Students will appreciate a traditional mountain craft. Procedure: Read “The Patchwork Quilt” by Valerie Flournoy and Jerry Pinkney. The students will design their own quilt square using fabric markers. The teacher will piece the squares together after class. Evaluation: Students will meet the objective with 100% accuracy. GPS- SSKG1 DAY FOUR Objective: Students will learn traditional Appalachian games. Procedure: Students will play two games. Game One: “Apple Race”: Each player races from the start to the goal with an apple on his head. The apple must not be touched with the hand, and anyone whose apple falls off his head must start all over. Game Two: “Tea Pot”: One player is sent out of the room. The rest decide upon some object in the room. Then they call back the one who has gone to guess what has been selected. Each one says something about the object but uses the word “teapot” in place of the object itself. The one who says something which enables the guesser to learn what the object is now becomes “It” and goes out. Evaluation: The students will meet the objective with 85% accuracy. GPS- SKP2 GPS- MKD1 DAY FIVE Objective: Unit Evaluation Procedure: Students will answer verbal questions, asked by the teacher, covering the Appalachian Mountain Unit. Evaluation: The class average will be at least 86%. GPS- ELAKR6 APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS TEST 1. What is the name of the Mountains we live in? Appalachian 2. How many states are in the Appalachian region? 13 States 3. What state do we live in? Georgia 4. What Indian Tribe was native to this area? Cherokee Indian Tribe 5. Where did the early Appalachian settlers come from? Scotland and Ireland 6. Name two important crops for the early Appalachian settlers. Corn and potatoes 7. Name the cooking utensils usually found in early Appalachian kitchens. Frying pan, coffee pot, bucket, iron pot, and hollowed out gourds. 8. What kind of syrup is made in the Appalachian Mountains? Sorghum Syrup 9. What was some useful ways wild game was used? Food, clothes, storage containers, and blankets from deer, bear, and rabbit skins; clothes hangers and gun parts from antler; bear fat for frying food. 10. Name two traditional Appalachian games?
